FREE Machine embroidery textile artist
Julia Brown is a textile artist specialising in free machine embroidery interpretation of landscape and natural forms. Pieces are worked over natural materials, layered to produce a textured ground and then painted and stitched.
Armed with my trusty 1970’s Bernina 830 machine and just two stitches, straight and zigzag I try to capture the essence of a landscape in free machine embroidery. I have a background in painting, dressmaking and environmental science and whilst those disciplines might seem unrelated, I find that using my sewing machine as a brush brings those loves together.
Landscape is not just about the physical grass and trees. It is also about the emotions it invokes in the eyes and heart of the viewer, the weather on the day, the light, the warmth in the air and the wind on the face. I want to capture both the seen and the unseen, to try an interpret what is felt about a place and the memories left there.
I can work to commission to capture your precious view, landscape or house portrait. I also produce a number of homeware items and this site has examples of a bespoke lampshade worked over natural linen and my “Starry starry night” candle mantles.
